Visual Studio cloning git repository - don't need whole repository

Multi tool use
I have worked with Visual Studio with the native TFS SCC, but I now have a TFS project that used git. I understand how to "clone the repository", etc. I don't need the whole repo, just my stuff. Is there any way to say only get this part of the repo ? Additionally, I am used to using workspaces to separate the branches, is that still going to work ?
Thanks
