If you search GitHub issues for this the author is getting a lot of reports like this. Apparently this has to do with mixing packages from conda-forge and from the default channel. I found that starting from a fresh anaconda installation and installing everything from conda-forge solved the issue. Just installing in a separate conda env did not solve the issue for me. See for instance github.com/conda-forge/fiona-feedstock/issues/…

thank you @AlexMarandon, I managed to get Fiona working, by creating a new environment. I did see the comments on github, and it does seem that this is a common problem indeed. Thank you for commenting on the issue!

I installed fiona as follows:

conda install -c conda-forge fiona

It installed without any errors. When I try to import fiona, I get the following error:

I guess this problem comes from conflicts with stuff already installed in the Anaconda distribution. My inelegant workaround is:

conda install -c conda-forge geopandas
conda remove geopandas fiona
pip install geopandas fiona

Because I did not wanted to uninstall geopandas, I solved de issue upgrading fiona via pip
