htaccess apply redirect only if not on a subdomain
I'm currently working on codebase that has multiple domains pointed at it, this could include subdomains (demo.example.com) or standard domains (example.com) - everything directs to one codebase, which is running on a server with Apache.
I currently have rules in the htaccess file that:
A - Force the user to https:
# ensure https
RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
B - Force the user to www.
# ensure www.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. [NC]
RewriteRule ^ https://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
This second rule does cause issues with anyone who wants to operate on a subdomain (for example beta.example.com) as it forces them to www. (www.beta.example.com) which is invalid.
What is the best way to set up htaccess so that it only applies the second (www.) rule if the domain is not a subdomain?
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
