Custom sounds with non-data notifications with FCM on Android Oreo

Prior to Android Oreo, notification messages (not notifications of type "data") were allowed to play custom sounds, with the app closed/killed, by setting the appropriate "sound" property when sending the notification JSON from the server.
Now, with Android Oreo, I'm not able to reproduce the same behavior. Specifically:
- I've created the NotificationChannel and set the appropriate sound
- when the app is open, the notification is handled by onMessageReceived(), and the custom sound is correctly played
- when the app is killed/closed, the notification is handled by the OS, and no custom sound is played: instead, the default Android notification sound is reproduced
As said, I've set both the "sound" property on the JSON sent by the server to the FCM server, both the sound property in the NotificationChannel when it is first created.
Reading other questions, I've seen many developers solving this issue migrating to data-type notifications, but I've not found any answers to my question: is it possible to play custom sounds for non-data notifications with the app closed, so without using data notifications?
