You are using @ResponseBody and returning a ModelClass object. What you need here is a MessageConverter. For example, you can use MappingJackson2MessageConverter, the Jackson 2 based implementaton of MessageConverter:

<mvc:annotation-driven>
<mvc:message-converters>
<bean class="org.springframework.http.converter.json.MappingJackson2HttpMessageConverter">
<property name="objectMapper" ref="objectMapper"/>
</bean>
</mvc:message-converters>
</mvc:annotation-driven>

<bean id="objectMapper" class="org.springframework.http.converter.json.Jackson2ObjectMapperFactoryBean">
...
</bean>

NOTE:

Also use the produces element of @RequestMapping annotation in controller to mention the producible media types of the mapped request. For example, if you want to send a JSON response:

@RequestMapping(produces = MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON_VALUE, ...)
